It looks like they used a round braid. Here is what I found on youtube:

Interestingly, it looks like they may have also used this technique for the flat parts:

Thanks for the help. I guess I was doing something wrong when braiding... I thought I had been doing a round braid but I was doing a step all wrong so it wasn't turning out like the ones in the link.

Looks like a flat and round braid mixed together. The videos I posted showed how to do the round braid, but look at this for the flat braid.

that one is the 4 strand Flat Braid done with 8 strands.
