My MIL crochet with yarn but I didn't know it could be done with paracord.

I wouldn't mind learning using paracord since paracord is manly.

You'd need a large guage hook, but it might work. Plus, it should unravel quickly if you ever needed the cord.

BTW, knitting and crocheting were originally sailors' skills, used to make and mend fishing nets, long before grandmas used them to make blankets.
