Ka Bar Becker BK2
Stout 1/4" thick blade for battoning, 1095 Cro-Van Steel that hones to a razors edge, and pretty decent price point.
Or go for the BK7 or 9 for a longer blade.
Your last sentence is what I look for in a knife.BK2 is a great knife!! It's an all around great tool. Very sharp and can take a beating.

Cash is always the problem when it comes to getting new things. Thanks all. Ya, they all look like great knives. I'll try to buy one if I can find the cash.
I'm buying mines from Amazon when I can. This is the cheapest I've found it online so far:
http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-Becker...TF8&qid=1410709043&sr=8-1&keywords=Becker+BK2
Look at the "Other Sellers" links on the right side of the page. Blade Shop has it for $72.74 with free shipping.
That's where I got mine.
Keep an eye out on your local craigslist as well. The BK2 is such a tough knife that it would be extremely difficult for a person to damage one beyond the point of simple resharpening.
