The "ball" on the end is a two strand diamond knot. The other is a double cow hitch, aka larks head knot doubled.

To replicate would the diamond knot be tied first and then the double cows hitch?

It seems from the pictures that the cows hitch is created using the midpoint of the closed end after the diamond knot is made or am I incorrect here?

I would suggest tieing the double larks head knot over a dowel or something and then loosen it up so that the crown knot could be slipped through. You could of course tie the larks head over the strands and then tie the crown knot at the end as an alternative. Try it both ways. See which you like best.
